Volcanoes

I am attracted to places that are undergoing formation or transformation, this has led me to seek out areas of geological activity making field trips to the seismic landscapes of Iceland, Italy and Big Island, Hawai‘i.  Volcanic landscape presents an elemental terrain and I am interested in trying to impart this in the physical surface of my prints. I often gather materials in the field, such as volcanic ash, to incorporate into my drawing media. In, for example, ‘Blast’ I drew the artwork with Indian ink and volcanic ash to create a tactile surface. Using natural materials from particular locations allows me to explore the physical and metaphorical relationship between process and place.  I want to create a relationship between the drawn image and the subject through my choice of media, mark, and paper.
